What is NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (also called the NDIS) is the new way of providing disability support.
The NDIS will provide all Australians under the age of 65 who have a permanent and significant disability with the reasonable and necessary supports they need to enjoy an ordinary life.
The NDIS will help people with disability achieve their goals. These supports will help you to achieve your goals, which might involve:

  • Independence
  • Community involvement
  • Education
  • Employment
  • Improved Health & wellbeing

With the NDIS, you can:

  • Access mainstream services and supports
  • Access community services and supports
  • Maintain informal support arrangements
  • Receive reasonable and necessary funded supports

As an insurance scheme, the NDIS takes a lifetime approach, investing in people with disability early to improve their outcomes later in life.

Where and when does the NDIS start?

The NDIS is being introduced in many stages around Australia to ensure it is successful and sustainable because it is a major change.

Your existing supports will remain in place until the NDIS is available in your area.

People will enter the NDIS differently depending on where they live, how old they are and the type of support they currently receive. In some states and territories, the NDIS will be rolled out by area while in other people will enter by age groups.

Am I eligible to Become an NDIS Participant

To be eligible for an individual support package with the NDIS, the following requirements need to be met:

  • have a permanent disability that significantly affects your ability to take part in everyday activities
  • be aged less than 65 when you first access the scheme
  • be an Australian citizen, live in Australia and hold a permanent visa or hold a Protected Special Category Visa

To start NDIS services, you need to become an NDIS participant by having your eligibility assessed and creating an NDIS plan with the NDIA for approved supports.

  • Register with the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). Contact us now for assistance to start your NDIS registration and find out if you’re eligible
  • The NDIA will send you an Access Request Form that you will need to complete with your GP or specialist
  • If you satisfy the eligibility requirements, you will receive notification of your Initial Planning Meeting, which can be held over the phone or face-to-face
  • Once you have received your approved NDIS Plan via post or the NDIA Participant Portal, you can contact Oceania Care as an NDIS participant to discuss the supports in your plan

You can also use the NDIS Access Checklist  to determine if you potentially qualify for the scheme.

How is my NDIS plan developed?

Once the NDIS confirms you are an eligible participant, a planner will arrange to meet with you.

Together, you will discuss your needs, goals and aspirations and they will undertake a full review of the supports and services you currently receive.  Using the information discussed, your planner will then develop a support plan that best meets your needs and your goals. You can nominate Oceania Care as your service provider at any time while preparing your support plan.

Oceania Care would also love to involve throughout the planning process to discuss your goals and potential support requirements.
